About the event

Members of SAHS are invited to attend a conservation class designed to examine the remaining evidence and therefore understand the ways in which lime mortars, plasters and washes can be used to safeguard our historic buildings and ruins, so that they can be enjoyed now and in the future.

The talks will explore the history of the use of lime as a building material and the associated benefits, the issues caused by using non-traditional materials for repairs, and how current thoughts from the lime-rival movement are changing the ways that conservation professionals are executing repair works today.  


The talks will use some real-world examples of nationally important scheduled ancient monuments, as well as more locally recognisable buildings, to show how building conservationists read a building to know what traditional materials were used, and how repair specifications are developed to consider constraints such as climate change.
