About the event

This talk is about a Protestant cleric, who is imprisoned three times during the reign of Henry VIII but recants to escape martyrdom. Marries during the reign of Edward VI and becomes Rector of Settrington but refuses to divorce in Mary Tudor's reign and needs money to escape the burnings.  Robert Wisdome's source of cash is a Catholic member of the gentry, Francis Aslaby, much of whose money comes from pillage during the wars against the Scots - an unholy alliance.  This talk includes details of the Seamer Rising of 1548. [Wisdome and Aslaby are spelt as the records]

The speaker is John Dodsworth, BA(Hons), MA, PGCE, Cert. Loc. His. A retired teacher of history and religious studies.  John is a former Local History Tutor for the WEA and the last thirteen years of his career were at St Peter's School, York.
