Commanet
In 2006 the Society was given a Heritage Lottery Fund grant to buy a laptop, camera, scanner and printer to participate in a national heritage recording project called Commanet. Commanet had been set up originally in a local library by encouraging residents to write down their memories and photocopy old photographs. These were put into an A4 folder for the public to browse.
As time passed and technology improved a website was set up with the local history information on. The project expanded to many other local libraries across the country and the website became an excellent resource for anyone researching local history. SAHS members publicised the project and met with local people, scanning their photographs and recording their personal memories of life in Scarborough from years gone by. Nearly 60 people participated, all agreeing to the use of their images and stories for the education of the public.
Sadly, in 2010 the Commanet website closed down due to lack of funding although the archive material was uploaded to the Society’s website. Below are some of the images from that archive and work is currently underway to convert and publish the stories again here on this website, the first of which is below.
